alt="Image credit: sudheer meduri via unsplash" style="aspect-ratio:16/9;object-fit:cover"/>

The Wayanad to Ooty distance is 116 km from Kalpetta, Wayanad’s district headquarters in Kerala, to Udhagamandalam in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu. Three hours for 116 km sounds slow until you drive it. You cross two Western Ghats escarpments and roughly 23 hairpin bends, and the Nadugani ghat section rarely lets you past 30 kmph.

Where you start matters more than most route guides admit. Wayanad is a district of some 2,130 sq km, not a town. From Sulthan Bathery it is only 92 km and two and a half hours. From Kalpetta, 116 km. From Vythiri, 132 km. From Mananthavady up north, closer to 145 km and a full four hours.

Plan a day, not an afternoon. Travellers who block out three hours arrive tired and having seen nothing, which is a waste of what is genuinely one of South India’s better short drives.

Wayanad to Ooty Route Options in 2026

There is one route you should take, and one that no longer exists for most people. Getting this wrong can cost you a 70 km backtrack, so it is worth two minutes now.

Take the Gudalur route. Kalpetta to Sulthan Bathery on NH-766, then south into the Nadugani ghat, over the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border past Devala and Cherambadi, through Pandalur into Gudalur, then up NH-181 through Naduvattam and Pykara into Ooty. It is the gentlest gradient of any approach to the Nilgiris, the tar is fair to good, and there is fuel and a proper meal at both Sulthan Bathery and Gudalur.

Do not plan on Kalhatty. The old shortcut — Masinagudi up 36 hairpin bends — has been closed to vehicles not registered in the Nilgiris since late April 2026, with 24-hour checkpoints at Theppakadu and Sigur. The district cited the bends’ accident record and traffic pressure on the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve. Traffic is diverted to Gudalur, adding about 40 km. If your plates are not TN-43, you will be turned around at the barrier. Plenty of older blogs still recommend this road; ignore them.

Gudalur (recommended)

Kalhatty

Via Bandipur

Distance

116 km

~90 km

~155 km

Time

3–3.5 hrs

2.5 hrs

4.5–5 hrs

Open to tourist cars

Yes

No, since Apr 2026

Yes

Hairpin bends

~23

36

~14

Night restriction

None

Closed overnight

9 pm–6 am ban

Worth it for

Everyone

Nilgiris residents

A Mudumalai safari

The third option, north through Muthanga and Bandipur to Gundlupet and back down to Gudalur, only earns its extra two hours if you actually want a safari.

E-Pass, Green Tax and Night Rules Before You Drive Wayanad to Ooty

Three rules, all enforced at physical barriers. Apply before you leave Wayanad. Signal on the Nadugani ghat is patchy, and the checkpost wants a QR code, not an explanation. Screenshot it.

Carry cash for green tax. You will pay an eco-fee crossing into the Nilgiris — roughly ₹150–₹200 for a car. Card machines and UPI at ghat checkposts fail regularly on poor networks, so small notes are the only thing guaranteed to work.

Respect the forest night bans. The Bandipur stretch of NH-766 shuts to all traffic from 9 pm to 6 am, and Mudumalai enforces the same. The Gudalur route has no formal ban, but do not drive the Nadugani ghat after dark anyway: no lighting, long stretches with no crash barrier, and gaur and elephants crossing at dusk near Devala.

Best Stops on the Wayanad to Ooty Drive: The Kerala Leg

Most people blast through the first 45 km.
