For a 25–30 August trip, base yourself in Alleppey (Alappuzha) if you want sadya and backwaters, Munnar (Idukki) if you want cool tea-hill weather, and Wayanad if you want waterfalls at full flow. Book two to three months ahead — the four-day holiday block sells out first.

Onam is the one week of the year when Kerala stops working and starts cooking. That’s the appeal, and it’s also the problem: you’re travelling into a state where four consecutive days are public holidays, where every family is hosting, and where the good homes were reserved months ago. If you’re planning 25–30 August 2026, the question isn’t really whether to go. It’s where to put your bags.

We’ve built this guide around that single decision. Below you’ll find what actually happens on each of those six dates, an honest comparison of the three bases most travellers shortlist – Alleppey, Munnar and Wayanad — and the practical details for eighteen places worth your time, with entry fees and timings. StayVista runs homestays and villas across all three, so we’ve included the ones our team would put a family in for Onam week, near the end.

One thing to settle first: late August is not peak monsoon, but it isn’t dry either. That shapes everything.

For Onam 2026, stay in Alleppey if the festival itself is the point, Munnar if you want the weather, and Wayanad if you want the landscape at its greenest. Alleppey sits closest to the two big Onam-week water events – the Aranmula Uthrattathi Boat Race on the Pampa River on 30 August 2026, and Punnamada Lake, home of the Nehru Trophy. Munnar and Wayanad are hill districts, roughly five and six hours away respectively, and both trade festival access for cooler air and fuller waterfalls.

Here’s the comparison we give travellers who call us undecided:

Alleppey (Alappuzha)

Munnar (Idukki)

Wayanad

Elevation

Sea level

1,600 m

700–2,100 m

Late-Aug temperature

24–30°C, humid

15–22°C, misty

18–27°C, cool

Onam access

Strongest – sadya culture, boat races, temple town

Moderate – resort and homestay sadya

Moderate – homestay sadya, tribal harvest traditions

Signature draw

Vembanad backwaters, houseboats

Tea estates, Eravikulam, Anamudi

Waterfalls, Edakkal Caves, wildlife

Monsoon risk

Waterlogging in low wards; boats usually run

Landslip risk on ghat roads; fog

Landslip risk; some treks shut

Drive from Kochi airport

Approx. 2 hrs

Approx. 4 hrs

Approx. 5.5 hrs

Best for

Families, first-timers, food travellers

Couples, cool-weather seekers

Nature lovers, photographers, groups

Weak spot

Hot, humid, crowded on Thiruvonam

Fewest festival events

Longest transfer; trek closures

Our honest read: if this is your first Onam, pick Alleppey and don’t overthink it. The festival is denser, the sadya is better, and you can drive to Aranmula in about two hours for the 30 August boat race. If you’ve done the backwaters before, or you’re travelling with anyone who wilts in humidity, Munnar wins on comfort. Wayanad is the specialist choice – spectacular in late August, but check road and trek status before you commit.

What we’ve noticed: The four-day holiday block (25–28 August) fills differently across the three. Alleppey homes and houseboats go first, usually by June. Munnar peaks over the weekend of 29–30 August as Kochi and Coimbatore families drive up. Wayanad stays available longest, which makes it the best late-booking bet if you’re reading this close to the date.

Onam 2026 Dates: What’s Happening on Each Day

Onam 2026 runs ten days from Atham in mid-August to Thiruvonam on Wednesday, 26 August 2026. Kerala declares public holidays on 25, 26, 27 and 28 August, and Kerala Tourism’s official Onam Week celebrations in Thiruvananthapuram run 24–30 August, closing with a grand procession on 30 August

That means your 25–30 August window catches the festival’s peak and its cultural tail. That’s three days before your window opens. If the Nehru Trophy is the reason you’re going, shift your dates. If not, the Aranmula race on 30 August is arguably the more moving event: it’s a temple ritual rather than a competition, and the boats belong to the villages along the Pampa.

Guests staying with us in Alleppey tell us the same thing every year: The sadya at a homestay beats the sadya at a hotel, and it isn’t close. Restaurant sadya during Onam runs from about ₹300 at local places to ₹1,500 and up at star hotels. Our homestay cook making it for eight people is cooking it every time a guest requests it.

Alleppey (Alappuzha): Best Base for Sadya, Backwaters and Boat Races

Alleppey, in Alappuzha district, is the strongest Onam base in Kerala because the festival’s water traditions are local to it. Punnamada Lake hosts the Nehru Trophy, the Vembanad backwaters run right through town, and Aranmula is about 65 km south for the 30 August race. Late August rain here is intermittent rather than constant — the greenery is at its peak precisely because of it.

Where the district falls short: humidity. Two more worth asking us about if those are taken: Serene Valley, set between villages roughly thirty minutes from Banasura Sagar Dam and good for groups who want quiet, and Princess of Wayanad in the Vythiri–Kalpetta belt, which puts Pookode Lake and Soochipara within easy reach.

Browse the full sets: homestays in Munnar, homestays in Wayanad and villas in Alleppey.

One request, if you want sadya: ask at the time of booking, not on arrival. Onam sadya takes a full morning and 20-plus dishes, and a host cooking for your group needs to shop on 24 or 25 August. Give notice and you’ll eat extremely well.

Monsoon Safety and What to Pack for Kerala in Late August

Late August is the tail of the southwest monsoon, not the end of it. Across the final third of the month, Kerala averages roughly 10–11 rain days, with daily totals easing compared to July (climate-data.org). Rain usually arrives in heavy spells with dry gaps, often clearing in the mornings — which is why every itinerary above front-loads the day.

What to actually do about it:

Check alerts the night before, every night. IMD issues district-level colour warnings, and the difference between yellow and orange changes whether a ghat road is a good idea. Idukki, Wayanad and Kozhikode are the districts to watch.

Assume hill treks may be closed. Chembra has been shut since 2024; Kolukkumalai’s track shuts after hard rain; Kuruva Island stays closed through the monsoon, June to September. Build a plan B into each hill day.

Don’t drive ghat roads after dark. Neriamangalam and Thamarassery are both fine in daylight and unpleasant in rain at night. Landslips happen on these stretches.

Book houseboats with licensed operators only. Boats generally run through the rains, but the operator’s judgement about when not to sail is what you’re paying for.

Pack: Quick-dry clothing, a proper rain shell rather than an umbrella, shoes with grip and a spare pair, a dry bag for cameras and documents, mosquito repellent, and any regular medication – pharmacies close on the holidays.

Carry cash. On 25–28 August a lot of small businesses are shut and rural ATMs run dry.

Is there a version of this trip where it rains for five days straight? Yes. It’s unlikely in late August, and it’s the reason we’d put a first-timer in Alleppey rather than on a ridge in Wayanad. The backwaters are good in the rain. A closed mountain road is not.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Onam 2026 and how many days is it?
Thiruvonam, the main day of Onam 2026, falls on Wednesday, 26 August 2026. The full festival runs ten days from Atham in mid-August. Kerala observes public holidays on 25, 26, 27 and 28 August 2026, giving most of the state a four-day break.

Where is the best place to stay in Kerala for Onam 2026?
Alleppey (Alappuzha) is the best base for Onam 2026 because the festival’s sadya and boat-race traditions are strongest there, and Aranmula’s 30 August race is about 1.75 hours away. Choose Munnar for cooler weather at 15–22°C, or Wayanad for waterfalls at peak flow.

Is late August a good time to visit Kerala?
Yes, with planning. Late August sits at the tail of the southwest monsoon, averaging around 10–11 rain days across the month’s final third, with rain typically falling in spells rather than all day. Landscapes are at their greenest and rates are below peak-season levels.

Can I see the Nehru Trophy Boat Race between 25 and 30 August 2026?
No. The 72nd Nehru Trophy Boat Race is scheduled for Saturday, 22 August 2026 at Punnamada Lake, Alappuzha — before that window. The Aranmula Uthrattathi Boat Race on the Pampa River on Sunday, 30 August 2026 is the race that falls inside those dates.

How far in advance should I book accommodation for Onam?
Book two to three months ahead for the 25–28 August holiday block, which is when homestays, villas and houseboats fill fastest. Houseboats in Alleppey should be reserved before festival week begins. The 29–30 August weekend typically holds availability longer.

Where can I eat a traditional Onam sadya?
The best sadya during Onam comes from homestays, where hosts cook family recipes — usually 20 to 30 dishes served on a banana leaf. Restaurant sadya starts around ₹300 at local establishments and reaches ₹1,500 and above at star hotels. Request a homestay sadya at booking, not on arrival.

Can I combine Munnar and Wayanad in one trip?
We don’t recommend it for a five- or six-night trip. There’s no direct ghat road between them, so the drive runs roughly 300 km and 8–9 hours via Thrissur and Kozhikode. Pair Alleppey with one hill district instead.

Are Wayanad’s attractions open in August 2026?
Partly. Somewhere between campaigns and posts, I discovered the joy of writing - and the impact words can have beyond numbers. Today, I bring together strategy and creativity to craft content that informs, feels relevant, and genuinely resonates.
