How to Reach Homestays in Himachal Without a Car
Himachal Pradesh has five functioning railheads and three airports that matter for travellers, and between them they put most of the state’s popular valleys within an hour’s drive of public transport. The problem is that almost every travel guide assumes you are driving up from Delhi or Chandigarh. That assumption quietly rules out solo travellers, people who do not want an eight-hour mountain drive, and anyone travelling with elderly parents who would rather not sit in a car on NH-5 for half a day.
We built this guide the other way round. We started with the railway stations and airports, then worked outward to find homestays in Himachal that sit within a genuinely short transfer — not “two hours but the views are nice.”

Gateway 1: Kalka Railway Station — 4 Homestays in Himachal Within an Hour
Kalka is the end of the broad-gauge line and the start of the toy train. It is also the single most useful railhead for reaching homestays in Himachal without a car, because the Solan district hill towns — Parwanoo, Kasauli, Dharampur, Kumarhatti — all sit within 35 km of it. Prepaid taxis are available at the station forecourt, and HRTC buses run to Solan and Shimla through the day.
Worth knowing: two intermediate stops on the Kalka–Shimla toy train, Dharampur Himachal and Kumarhatti–Dagshai, cut the road transfer dramatically for two of the stays below. If you are willing to change from the Shatabdi onto the narrow-gauge train at Kalka, your taxi leg drops from 35 km to 8 km.

If you want to arrive by toy train rather than by road, this is the stay to pick. Nivriti sits 15 km from Dharampur Heritage railway station, a scheduled halt on the Kalka–Shimla narrow-gauge line, putting it about 35 minutes from a platform. 3. Altiora Kasauli
The largest of the Kasauli properties on this list, and the best value per head for a big group. Altiora is 8 km from Dharampur bus stand — a 20–25 minute transfer — and 35 km from Kalka railway station. Six bedrooms with six ensuite bathrooms sleep up to 18, and it comes with a private pool, a lawn, a terrace, a BBQ grill and a bonfire pit. It is also only 4 km from both Kasauli Market and Kasauli Mall Road, so evenings out do not require a long drive back. This is a newer addition to StayVista Kasauli, so the review count is still building.

4. Gazania Villa — Kumarhatti
Gazania is 1 km from Kumarhatti Market and 8 km from Solan bus stand, which makes it one of the best-connected cottages in Kasauli district for anyone arriving without a car. From Kalka railway station it is 32 km, or roughly an hour. Gateway 2: Shimla Railway Station — 3 Homestays in Himachal at the End of the Toy Train
The Kalka–Shimla Railway is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 2008 under the Mountain Railways of India. It runs 96 km, climbs more than 1,400 m, and passes through 102 tunnels, 864 bridges and 919 curves. Five regular trains run the route daily as of 2026, and in February 2026 Northern Railway introduced the first narrow-gauge air-brake rake on the section. The Shivalik Deluxe Express is the quickest at about 5 hours; the Himalayan Queen takes around 5 hours 20 minutes.

A word of caution on flying to Shimla: Jubbarhatti Airport (SLV) has a 1,200 m runway at 1,463 m elevation, and scheduled service has been intermittent. Do not build an itinerary around it. Take the train.

This is the single most accessible property in the entire guide. Gateway 3: Bhuntar Airport — 2 Homestays in Himachal in the Kullu Valley
Kullu–Manali Airport at Bhuntar (KUU) is the only airport inside the Kullu valley. Alliance Air operates the Delhi route, flight time approximately 1 hour 20 minutes, with roughly three services a week as of mid-2026. It is a small airport with a short runway and it is weather-dependent, so build in a buffer day and keep an HRTC Volvo booking as a fallback — the Chandigarh Airport–Manali Volvo departs at 7:50 PM and arrives 6:00 AM for ₹1,172.
Bhuntar is also the road junction for Parvati Valley. Kasol lies about 31 km east of the airport, so if your plan involves cottages in Kasol or a Kheerganga trek, a Raison base still works as a comfortable launch point with better road access than the Parvati road itself.
8. Mayflower Aramgarh — Raison, Kullu
The shortest airport transfer in the Kullu valley on this list: 20 km from Bhuntar Airport, roughly 35–40 minutes on the Kullu–Manali highway. This four-bedroom cottage in Kullu Manali territory sleeps 8–10, holds a 4.9 rating across 26 reviews, and includes breakfast in the rate — a genuine convenience when you have flown in and do not have a car to go find morning chai. Kangra Airport at Gaggal (DHM) is the best-connected airport in Himachal. IndiGo and SpiceJet both fly the Delhi route non-stop in about 1 hour 20–30 minutes, and Chandigarh services run as well; together those two routes account for essentially all traffic at the airport. Flights use ATR-type turboprops and operations are weather-sensitive, with fog and low cloud causing delays.
The Kangra valley also has its own narrow-gauge railway. Kangra Mandir and Baijnath Paprola are useful halts, and Pathankot is the nearest broad-gauge junction. For anyone comparing villas in Dharamshala on accessibility, Gaggal is the deciding factor: all three of these homestays in Himachal sit within 15 km of the terminal.

The best-connected property in the Kangra valley and arguably the strongest argument in this guide for travelling car-free. Car-Free Itineraries
Three routes we have used ourselves, each built around the homestays in Himachal listed above and each requiring no long-distance driving at any point.
The 3-Day Kalka Weekend
Day 1 — 12011 Shatabdi from New Delhi, 07:40 to Kalka 11:40. Taxi 17 km to Mountain Mirage in Parwanoo, arriving around 12:30 PM. Afternoon on the lawns; bonfire in the evening.
Day 2 — Taxi to Kasauli Mall Road, Christ Church and the Gilbert Trail. Kasauli Brewery in the afternoon. Back by 6 PM.
Day 3 — Late checkout at 11 AM, taxi to Kalka, 12012 Shatabdi back to Delhi.
The 5-Day Toy Train Route
Day 1 — Shatabdi to Kalka. Change onto the Shivalik Deluxe Express. Alight at Dharampur; 15 km to Sukh @ Nivriti. Two nights.
Day 3 — Rejoin the toy train at Dharampur, continue to Tara Devi. 1.5 km to Berry @ Evaara Woods. Two nights, with Mall Road and Jakhoo Temple on foot and by local bus.
Day 5 — Toy train from Shimla to Kalka, Shatabdi to Delhi.
This is the single best car-free route in Himachal and it is under-used. You spend two days on a UNESCO World Heritage railway and never book a long-distance cab.
The 4-Day Kangra Fly-In
Day 1 — Morning IndiGo or SpiceJet flight, Delhi to Gaggal, roughly 1 hour 25 minutes. 15 km to Villa Vivendi. Afternoon at Dharamshala Market.
Day 2 — Local bus to McLeod Ganj from the bus stand 100 m away. Tsuglagkhang Complex, Bhagsu Nag.
Day 3 — Dharamshala Skyway to the upper station; Dal Lake and Naddi viewpoint.
Day 4 — Morning flight back from Gaggal.
