Munnar Photography Guide: 8 Spots, the Best Light and Where to Stay

What they skip is the part that decides whether you get the shot: where you sleep, how far the sunrise is from your bed, and which places are closed or restricted. That means the useful question isn’t “which spot”, it’s “which spot at which hour”. A viewpoint that’s busy at 10 AM can be quiet and golden at 6.

1. Kolukkumalai: the sunrise start
In short: Kolukkumalai is the famous tea-estate sunrise, but the logistics are real: visitors typically start from Suryanelli around 4 AM, and only 4×4 jeeps can reach the drop-off, followed by a walk of about 1 to 1.5 km, roughly 30 minutes, to the viewpoint. (Onmanorama, 2025)
It’s often described as one of the world’s highest tea estates. Altitude figures vary by source, from about 7,100 feet to about 7,900 feet, and the “highest in the world” claim isn’t firmly established, so we’d say “among the highest”. The estate also sits across the Kerala and Tamil Nadu border, and the only road to it passes through Kerala.
A 2025 district order banned off-road jeep safaris, but the motor vehicle department said the ban doesn’t apply to the Kolukkumalai jeeps, which are the only way up. Peak days, especially New Year’s Day, are crowded.
2. Top Station: the panorama
In short: Top Station is about 32 km from Munnar and is described as the highest point in the area, at roughly 1,700 m on the Munnar-Kodaikanal road, with views over the Western Ghats and the Theni valley. (munnar.com)
It’s the spot for a wide lens and a layered, misty horizon. We couldn’t verify sunrise conditions at Top Station specifically, so check with your host before planning a dawn trip. Stays at Pothamedu are the closest of ours, a short extra drive beyond Munnar town.
3. Echo Point: reflections on the lake
In short: Echo Point is about 15 km from Munnar, between Mattupetty Dam and Kundala Lake. Guides call it a good photography location, and boating is available. Guides suggest early morning or late afternoon for mirror-like water. (munnar.com)
Why does calm water matter? Because reflections need still air, and wind usually builds by midday.
4. Mattupetty Dam: still water and tea gardens
In short: Mattupetty is 10 to 13 km from the Munnar bus station, depending on the source. Its still water reflects the surrounding tea gardens, and it’s a natural stop on the way to Echo Point and Top Station. (munnar.com)
Golden hour suits it best, when the low light picks out the terraces on the far bank.
5. The tea estates near town
In short: the terraces closest to Munnar give the classic leading-line shot, and the roadside “Photo Point” about 4 km out is the best-known stop. It sits on a busy road, so take care near traffic. (munnar.com)
Tea estates are working land. Ask before stepping between the bushes, keep to paths and be careful when photographing people at work.
6. Eravikulam National Park: the Nilgiri tahr
In short: Eravikulam is the place for the endangered Nilgiri tahr, but the park closes each year for the calving season, usually February to March. A 2023 order set the closure from 1 February to 31 March. We found no 2026 notice, so check before you plan. (Onmanorama, 2023)

A note on Anamudi. Older guides, including ours, suggest climbing Anamudi. The summit is in the park’s core zone, and sources conflict: one describes a guided-trek permit route from November to May, another says trekking is forbidden. Don’t plan around it. Confirm with the park office.
7. Attukal waterfalls
In short: Attukal, near Munnar, is a waterfall to photograph with a slow shutter speed, and it’s usually at its strongest in the rains. We couldn’t find a source for its season or access, so treat that as a local-knowledge point and ask your host. The rocks are slippery, so keep your footing before your framing.
Use a tripod on firm ground and keep gear dry.
8. Pothamedu viewpoint
In short: Pothamedu is on the slopes just above Munnar town, and its viewpoint is about 1 km by road from our Vale Echoes and Paradise Valley villas (our OSRM measurement). The Paradise Valley page describes sunsets from the villa, so evening light is the one to plan around.

Spice Notes is the closest of our Munnar villas to the Kolukkumalai start, about 18 km from Suryanelli by road. Vale Echoes and Paradise Valley in Pothamedu are about 4 to 5 km from Munnar town and about 15 km from Mattupetty, so they suit Top Station, Mattupetty, and Echo Point. Monte Crest Homestay in Thokkupara also sits on this side of Munnar. Its page says 30 km from Munnar, but a road measurement gives about 13 km, so we’ve left it out of the table.
Vale Echoes and Paradise Valley: views from the balcony
Vale Echoes in Pothamedu has four rooms for 8 to 10 guests. Its page describes balconies with views of the valley, a workstation in the rooms, and complimentary breakfast. It also says a 7 KVA generator can support appliances for a couple of hours in a power cut, which is worth knowing if you’re charging batteries and cards. Paradise Valley has four rooms for 8 to 12 guests, a terrace and a lawn with a viewing deck over the Munnar hills. Its page describes sunsets from the villa, and complimentary breakfast. Both are bookable by room as Atrium and Panorama, each two rooms for 4 to 6 guests, which suits a solo photographer or a pair.
Spice Notes: the Kolukkumalai base
Spice Notes in Rajakkad, Bison Valley, has five rooms for 10 to 15 guests, a lawn with a mountain view, balconies, a heater in the rooms, and complimentary breakfast. Guests can use the kitchen to make tea and coffee, which helps with a pre-dawn start. It’s about 18 km from Suryanelli. Clove is two rooms for 4 to 6 guests.
Misty Village: for a larger group
Misty Village in Rajakumari has five rooms for 10 to 15 guests, balconies with views over greenery, a lawn and kitchen access. It’s pet-friendly, and complimentary breakfast is included. It suits a group trip where photography is part of the plan, not the whole plan.
Best for: a photographer who wants a private lawn and balcony, an early start and a quiet base, rather than a hotel corridor.
Can you shoot at a StayVista villa in Munnar?

Can you fly a drone in Munnar?
Flying a drone in India follows the Drone Rules, 2021: airspace is split into green, yellow, and red zones on the Digital Sky map, and drones must be registered. Yellow and red zones need permission. Check the latest airspace map before you fly, and ask the estate or the forest department for permission where relevant. We couldn’t verify specific drone rules for Munnar’s protected areas.
