The spread matters. A “65 km” trip from the old city becomes a longer drive from a stay on the far side of Jodhpur, so allow for it when you plan the pickup and the sunset.
What does a safari day involve?
A typical day trip visits the temples first, then heads to the dunes in the afternoon, rides at sunset and returns after dark. One operator listing puts the safari itself at about three hours, starting mid-afternoon. Overnight versions add dinner at a campsite and a morning village walk with breakfast before the return to Jodhpur. (Operator listings, 2025)
Here’s how a day usually fits together, based on those listings:
- Late morning to midday: leave Jodhpur and reach Osian.
- Afternoon: temples, then a jeep or camel ride into the dunes.
- Sunset: stop on the dunes for photos.
- Evening: the drive back, or dinner at a camp if you’re staying over.
Why start in the afternoon? Because the light is softest and the sand is coolest around sunset, and the ride timing follows it.
We haven’t given start times or durations as fixed facts. They vary by operator and by season. Ask for the pickup, ride length, and return time in writing.
Camel safari or jeep safari?
A camel ride is slower and quieter and suits a sunset. A jeep covers more dune ground in less time. If you choose a camel, check how the animals are treated first: the RSPCA says nose pegs cause harm and are not justified, and recommends asking operators whether they use them and what weight limits apply. A short welfare checklist, drawn from that guidance and from Blue Cross of India’s concerns:
- Ask whether nose pegs are used, and prefer an operator who says no.
- Look at the camels. They should appear healthy, rested and well fed.
- Avoid overloaded rides. Don’t accept a camel carrying more riders than it can comfortably take.
- Ask about weight and age limits before you book children or heavier riders.
Some listings also say jeep safaris show local wildlife such as deer and peacocks. We couldn’t verify specific sightings, so don’t plan around them.
When is the best time for a desert safari at Osian?
October to March is the comfortable season. Jodhpur’s 1991 to 2020 climate normals give average daily highs of about 26 C in January and 28 C in December, against about 42 C in May and 41 C in June. Winter nights are cool, so carry a layer for the evening ride. (Outlook Traveller, Wikipedia)

Where should you stay for an Osian day trip?
Osian itself has no StayVista stay. The practical base is Jodhpur. Sunset Escape, in Basni, is a seven-room villa for 14 to 21 guests, about 84 km from Osian by road. Grande at Sunset Escape is its two-room part for 4 to 6 guests. Both include breakfast. (Villa page, October 2026)
Sunset Escape has a terrace, a bonfire area, a barbecue, air conditioning and Wi-Fi. Breakfast is complimentary, and guests may use the kitchen to make tea, coffee, and instant noodles at no extra charge, which helps with an early start. Other meals can be eaten out or ordered in. The page lists it as about 8 km from Jodhpur airport; our road measurement gives about 11 km.
House rules that matter for a group trip: it isn’t pet-friendly, and all-male groups are not allowed. Alcohol and non-vegetarian food are allowed. Noise should be kept down after 10 PM, and outside vendors or events need 48 hours’ notice. Grande at Sunset Escape suits a smaller group.
Be honest with yourself about the distance. A group booked on the western side of Jodhpur has the longest drive to Osian, and the safari and the return will fill most of a day. Best for: a family or friends’ group of 14 or more that wants a private house in Jodhpur and one desert day trip.
What if you want to sleep in the desert?
If you want a night in the dunes, StayVista’s desert stays are near Jaisalmer, not Osian. Sands of Thar is about 40 km from Jaisalmer airport, with a private pool, a heater, and air conditioning. Nomads’ Nest Campout offers tents on an 11-tent property. Ask the team to check availability for your dates.
Sands of Thar is divided into four units: three tents and a treehouse, with the main unit sleeping 6 to 9 across three rooms. The page lists an infinity pool, a private pool, a gazebo, and a cook available at an additional cost, and it welcomes pets. A caretaker is on site from 8 AM to 8 PM and stays outside the premises.
Nomads’ Nest Campout books one tent at a time within an 11-tent property, for two to three guests, with common spaces shared. It is vegetarian only: non-vegetarian food can’t be cooked or eaten. Alcohol is allowed in designated areas. It isn’t pet-friendly or wheelchair-friendly, and its generator covers one fan and one light in each tent for up to three hours during a power cut. The page calls it “the centre of the golden city”, but also gives 25 km to the bus stand, so confirm the location.
