Top 3 Viral Konkan Coastal Roads + 5 More Scenic Drives: Aare Ware, Devgad & Kasheli (2026 Guide)

(1)

A 30-second Reel of a red-cliff coastal road, a single car curving toward the Arabian Sea, the caption “Top 3 hidden Konkan roads” — chances are it’s been served to you at least once since late 2025. Behind those Reels are three real stretches in coastal Maharashtra: Aare Ware Road in Ratnagiri district, the Devgad–Kunkeshwar Road in Sindhudurg, and Kasheli (also called Devghali) near Rajapur. They’re short, drivable, and largely uncrowded — but the Reels show where without explaining how. StayVista hosts 60+ properties along the Konkan coast, and our hosts get this exact question every week. Here’s the planning guide we wished existed.

Three Konkan coastal roads — Aare Ware (Ratnagiri), Devgad–Kunkeshwar (Sindhudurg), and Kasheli/Devghali (Rajapur) — went viral on Instagram in late 2025 for cliff-hugging ocean views, twin beaches, and zipline-worthy drops. The full Mumbai → Ratnagiri → Devgad loop covers 350 km on NH66, takes 2–3 days minimum, and is best done in May 2026 (the last clear window before monsoon) or October–March. Skip June–September on these specific cliff stretches — landslip risk on rural patches is real.

Total trip from Mumbai: ~350 km one-way via NH66 (8–9 hours under current 2026 conditions).

Days needed: 2 minimum, 3 recommended, 4 ideal.

Vehicle: Any sedan/SUV is fine for NH66; SUV preferred for the Ratnagiri–Devgad rural section.

Monsoon (June–September): not recommended on these cliff roads.

Three Konkan coastal roads — Aare Ware Road in Ratnagiri, Devgad–Kunkeshwar Road in Sindhudurg, and Kasheli (Devghali) Road near Rajapur — went viral on Instagram from late 2025 onward, mostly through POV Reels showing cliff-edge curves and dramatic Arabian Sea drops. The recurring caption pattern “Top 3 hidden Konkan roads” has driven 10,000+ likes per Reel and made these stretches Maharashtra’s defining road-trip story for 2026.

Three things converged to make this happen now. First, NH66 upgrades cut Mumbai–Ratnagiri travel from a punishing 11–12 hours to a manageable 8–9 (Punenow News, 2026), making a weekend trip realistic for the first time. Second, India’s domestic tourism grew 17.5% year-on-year in 2024 — from 2,508 million visits to 2,948 million (IBEF, 2025) — and 4 in 10 Indians now organise their own trips rather than booking through agencies (TGM Research India Travel Insights, 2025). Third, Maharashtra became the country’s top state for foreign tourist arrivals (3.71 million visits per the India Tourism Data Compendium 2025), pushing creator attention toward state landscapes that don’t fit the Goa template.

The visual signature does the rest: red laterite cliffs, sparse traffic, sunsets that hit a wall of orange. It’s the authentic Maharashtra coast — and people are tired of crowded Goa.

Where Exactly Are Aare Ware, Devgad, and Kasheli?

Konkan is a 720-km coastal region of Maharashtra, not a single district. It spans three districts: Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg. Two of the three viral roads sit in Ratnagiri district (Aare Ware and Kasheli), and one in Sindhudurg district (Devgad). All three are reachable from Ratnagiri city, which works well as a 2–3 day base.

Plain-text geography:

  • Aare Ware — 20 km north of Ratnagiri city, on the coastal road to Ganpatipule. Nearest railway: Ratnagiri (Konkan Railway). Nearest airport: Chipi-Sindhudurg (170 km) or Mumbai (350 km).
  • Kasheli (Devghali) — 30 km north of Ratnagiri city, near Rajapur. Off NH66 by 8 km. Nearest railway: Rajapur Road (15 km).
  • Devgad — 110 km south of Ratnagiri (about 3 hours’ drive). Kunkeshwar village is 14 km further south of Devgad town. Nearest railway: Kankavli (60 km). Nearest airport: Chipi-Sindhudurg (90 km).

The spine that connects everything is NH66 (Mumbai–Goa Highway, formerly NH17). Aare Ware is reached via a coastal detour from NH66; Kasheli is a short hop off it; Devgad is a longer western branch. All three are clustered tightly enough that a 3-day trip can hit each one without backtracking — which is why the Instagram trend treats them as a set.

The 3 Viral Roads in Detail

Aare Ware Road (Ratnagiri → Ganpatipule, 10 km)

The Aare Ware Road is a 10-km coastal stretch between Ratnagiri and Ganpatipule, hugging twin beaches that share its name. It’s home to India’s first over-the-ocean dual cable zipline — 1,400 ft long, suspended 150–180 ft above sea level, reaching speeds of 35–40 km/h (Outlook Traveller, 2024). Maharashtra Tourism and the Zilla Parishad Ratnagiri both list it among the Konkan coast’s most scenic stretches.

The twin beaches are 3 km long combined and separated by a small headland. From the road, you get the postcard view; from the beach, you get the zipline launch and a quiet shoreline that’s better for walking than swimming.

Practical details:

  • Beach entry: Free
  • Beach timings: 6 AM – 6 PM
  • Ocean Fly Zipline: ₹599–600/person, 9:30 AM – 6:30 PM, daily during operating season (Universal Adventures)
  • Zipline restrictions: Minimum age 5; weight 40–200 kg (under 40 kg = pair zipline only); weather-dependent — closed during monsoon (June–September) and on rough-weather days
  • Best time to visit: October–March is peak (clear skies, 22–28°C); May 2026 is the last feasible pre-monsoon window; aim for sunset (5–6 PM) for the photographic golden-hour drive
  • How to reach: 20 km from Ratnagiri city (~35 min); 12 km from Ganpatipule (~20 min)
  • Time required: 2–3 hours, including the drive both directions
  • Ideal for: Couples, friend groups, biker groups, families with kids 5+
  • Pro tip: Drive Ratnagiri → Ganpatipule, do the zipline at 4 PM, then drive back at sunset for the photogenic stretch in golden light. Skip swimming — currents are strong, and the depth is uneven.

Devgad–Kunkeshwar Road (Sindhudurg, 14 km)

Devgad’s coastal road runs roughly 14 km south to Kunkeshwar village, weaving past the Devgad Windmill Garden, the Mithmubri viewpoint, and the 12th-century Kunkeshwar Shiva Temple before opening onto Kunkeshwar Beach. Devgad is also the GI-tagged origin of India’s Devgad Alphonso mango — making this the route that delivers scenery, spirituality, and seafood in one stretch. The Kunkeshwar Temple was built in 1100 AD by the Yadav Kings and was a frequent stop for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj (Trip.com, 2026).

This is also where you’ll find India’s first on-coast zipline — distinct from Aare Ware’s over-ocean version. The Devgad Zipline is 1,885 ft long and 280 ft high, run by Flying Konkan, and starts inside the Windmill Garden (Outlook TravellerTripadvisor). Most articles confuse the two; we get them right.

Practical details:

  • Devgad Windmill Garden: Free entry; parking ₹20 (2-wheeler) / ₹50 (4-wheeler); best 5–6 PM for sunset
  • Mithmubri Viewpoint: Free; 2 km from Taramumbari; open 24 hrs (no facilities — carry water)
  • Kunkeshwar Temple: Free; darshan 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM (Trip.com)
  • Devgad Zipline (Flying Konkan): Contact +91-9405566622 for current pricing; ride takes 30–45 min including prep
  • Best time to visit: October–March for the coastal drive (peak season); April–June if you want to combine the trip with Devgad Alphonso mango shopping; sunset for the windmill garden, evening for Kunkeshwar Temple aarti
  • How to reach: Devgad town is 110 km south of Ratnagiri (~3 hrs); Kunkeshwar village is 14 km further south
  • Time required: Half-day to full day
  • Ideal for: Couples, families, photography enthusiasts, mango lovers, devotees
  • Pro tip: Hit the Windmill Garden at 5 PM, drive 14 km south to Kunkeshwar Temple before 7 PM (last darshan), then dinner at Kunkeshwar Beach. Buy Devgad Alphonso mangoes only April–June — that’s peak harvest.

Kasheli / Devghali Road (Rajapur, Ratnagiri, ~5 km)

Kasheli, also called Devghali, is a short cliff-top coastal road near Rajapur in Ratnagiri district. It ends at a flat “table point” viewpoint and a tide-dependent island beach. It’s the least developed of the three viral roads — fewer crowds, no commercial activity, and a short walk down to a turquoise cove that’s safest to access during low tide. There’s no zipline, no temple, no parking attendant. That’s the appeal.

Practical details:

  • Kasheli viewpoint: Free; open 24 hrs; no facilities (no toilets, no shops within 5 km)
  • Beach access: Tide-dependent — verify low tide via Tide-Forecast Rajapur before descending
  • Best time to visit: Winter mornings (October–February) for the clearest views; sunset for the table-point shot
  • How to reach: ~30 km north of Ratnagiri city via Rajapur (~60 min); 8 km off NH66; SUV or motorcycle recommended for the last 2 km of unpaved road
  • Time required: 2–3 hours (viewpoint + beach descent + return)
  • Ideal for: Couples seeking solitude, photographers, experienced bikers
  • Pro tip: Skip the beach descent in monsoon — the cliff path becomes slippery, and waves cover the cove. Carry your own water and snacks; mobile signal is patchy.

Aare Ware vs Devgad vs Kasheli — Which Should You Prioritise?

If you have to pick one: Aare Ware for first-timers (most accessible, signature zipline, Ratnagiri base), Devgad for slow-trip travellers (more sights to chain, mango and temple culture), and Kasheli for solitude seekers and photographers (least developed, most uncrowded, tide-dependent access). All three are within 130 km of each other and can be done in a single 3-day loop from a Ratnagiri base.

The bigger question is: how much time do you have? With one weekend, do Aare Ware as a day trip from Ratnagiri. With three days, add Kasheli on a half-day loop and Devgad on day three. In four days, extend south to Tarkarli and Malvan.

5 More Scenic Konkan Roads Worth Adding to the Trip

Beyond the trending three, the Konkan coast has another half-dozen drives that don’t show up on Instagram but reward the detour. We’ve ranked these by how naturally they extend the core 3-road loop.

  1. Tarkarli–Malvan Coastal Stretch (Sindhudurg, 18 km). Sangam Beach, scuba diving from Tarkarli, and fort views from Sindhudurg. Best for water-sports enthusiasts. For activity ideas, see our things to do in Tarkarli guide.
  2. Vengurla–Sagareshwar Drive (Sindhudurg, 22 km). Quietest stretch of the Konkan coast, palms and clean beaches, near the Goa border. Frame it as the “if you wanted Goa but couldn’t deal with the crowds” stop — see our Goa-alternative guide.
  3. Harnai–Anjarle Road (Ratnagiri, 12 km). Suvarnadurg Fort views, dolphin-watching boats from Harnai port, and the famous Kadyavarcha Ganpati temple perched on a cliff at Anjarle.
  4. Velneshwar–Guhagar Coastal Drive (Ratnagiri, 25 km). Temple-town drives past the Velneshwar Shiva temple to Guhagar’s clean beach. The 80-km lead-up to Guhagar offers hairpin bends and dramatic ocean glimpses.
  5. Kashedi Ghat tunnel section on NH66 (Raigad / Ratnagiri border). Not coastal, but the most-improved scenic-drive infrastructure of 2026. The new Kashedi Ghat tunnels cut roughly 30 minutes off the Mumbai–Ratnagiri leg (Team-BHP).

Each of these can absorb a half-day. None requires special skill — just a willingness to extend the trip by a day.

When Is the Best Time for a Konkan Coastal Road Trip?

October to March is peak season — clear skies, comfortable 22–28°C, and dry roads. May 2026 is the last feasible window before monsoon (32°C+ but driveable). June to September monsoon is not recommended for these specific cliff roads due to landslip risk and reduced visibility on rural single-lane sections.

Our take: Most travel content recommends Konkan year-round to avoid discouraging clicks. We don’t. The cliff roads at Aare Ware and Kasheli are genuinely risky in heavy monsoon — Konkan averages 200–400 mm of rain per month between June and September. If you want monsoon Konkan, go for the waterfalls instead.

Month-by-month:

  • October–February (peak): Book your stay 6–8 weeks ahead. StayVista’s Konkan villas fill fast for Diwali and Christmas weekends.
  • March – early May: Hot but driveable; mango season for Devgad (April–June peak Alphonso harvest).
  • May 2026 (current — last clear window): 30–35°C. Drive dawn–to–dusk only. Zipline operations continue, weather permitting.
  • June–September monsoon: Skip these specific cliff roads. The Konkan waterfalls bloom in monsoon — explore those via our 12 best Konkan waterfalls guide.

How to Plan a 2-Day, 3-Day, or 4-Day Itinerary

The 3-day version is what most travellers from Mumbai and Pune end up doing. It hits all three viral roads without forcing a 13-hour driving day. Here’s how the timing breaks:

2-day (Mumbai weekend warriors):

  • Day 1: Mumbai → Ratnagiri via NH66 (8–9 hrs). Stay overnight in Ratnagiri.
  • Day 2: Aare Ware Road + zipline + Ganpatipule (full morning). Drive back to Mumbai by afternoon (350 km return).
  • Verdict: Tight, but feasible if you leave Mumbai by 5 AM both days.

3-day (recommended):

  • Day 1: Mumbai → Ratnagiri (8–9 hrs). Settle in.
  • Day 2: Aare Ware Road + Ganpatipule (full day). Sunset zipline.
  • Day 3: Ratnagiri → Kasheli (morning) → Devgad and Kunkeshwar (afternoon and evening). Stay overnight in Tarkarli or drive back the next morning.

4-day (slow trip):

  • Add a Day 4 anchored in Tarkarli/Malvan — scuba, Sindhudurg Fort by boat, beach time. Chain back via the new Mumbai–Sindhudurg Ro-Ro ferry (live since March 2026), which cuts the return to about 4 hours.

Pro tip: Start your Mumbai drive between 4–6 AM to clear Panvel before truck traffic builds up. Fuel up before Mahad — petrol stations thin out from there to Chiplun.

For the long-form version covering forts, beaches, and Tarkarli at the end, see our longer 7-day Konkan road trip itinerary and places to stop on the Mumbai–Ratnagiri road trip.

Driving on NH66 + Rural Konkan: Vehicle, Fuel, Toll & Safety

NH66 is in its best shape in years. Most stretches in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg are 73–98% complete as of early 2026, with four pending flyovers in Ratnagiri district targeted for completion by March 2026 (Punenow News, 2026). The full 466-km Konkan expressway passes through 232 villages in Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg. Mumbai → Ratnagiri currently runs 8–9 hours; the promised 6-hour drive is still a few months out.

scenic roads of konkan road trip in may

Vehicle recommendations:

  • SUV (Innova, XUV700, etc.) — Best choice. Higher ground clearance handles the Ratnagiri–Devgad rural stretch.
  • Sedan/hatchback — Fine for NH66 itself. Avoid low-profile tyres; check suspension before leaving.
  • Bikes (Royal Enfield, ADV tourers) — Thrilling on the curves. Daylight only; helmet mandatory; carry rain gear even in May.

Toll, fuel, apps:

  • Mumbai–Ratnagiri toll: ~₹800 one-way (NH66 + bypass tolls)
  • Fuel stops: Stations sparse post-Chiplun. Fuel up every 150 km.
  • Apps: Google Maps offline, FasTag wallet, Petrol Pump Locator. Mobile signal drops on rural stretches — download offline maps before leaving.

Safety basics: Drive dawn–to–dusk only (no streetlights on rural sections). Watch for cattle and slow trucks on the Mangaon–Sangameshwar segment. Keep a 100m gap from trucks during overtakes; horn on blind curves.

If driving long distances isn’t your thing, the Mumbai–Sindhudurg Ro-Ro ferry (live since 1st March 2026) gets you to the Konkan coast in ~4 hours, leaving the road trip for the local Konkan stretches only. We’ve also covered the full Mumbai-to-Goa road trip in our 2026 route guide for travellers extending the trip past Sindhudurg.

Where to Stay Along the Konkan Coastal Road Trip

StayVista hosts 60+ villas along the Konkan coast. For this 3-road loop, three anchor bases work best — pick by which road you want to wake up next to.

Ratnagiri base — Best for Aare Ware + Kasheli day trips. Ratnagiri-based stays put you within 35 minutes of Aare Ware’s zipline and an hour of Kasheli’s table point. Browse StayVista villas in Ratnagiri for full villas with pools, or StayVista cottages in Ratnagiri for compact homestay-style options.

Tarkarli / Malvan base — Best for the Devgad day trip + extended Sindhudurg exploration. Our featured property here is Nautical Nook: a 4-BHK beachfront villa just steps from Tarkarli Beach, pet-friendly, 17 km from Sindhudurg airport, and ideal for families or groups of 8–10 doing the full coastal loop. The villa works well as a Day 3–4 anchor — drive Devgad in the morning, return to Nautical Nook for sunset and seafood. For more options, see StayVista villas in Tarkarli or our broader beach villas collection.

There’s also Ocean Breeze in Guhagar, which is a pet-friendly villa with a pool in Konkan. It can host up to 21 guests and has 7 bedrooms. Very close to the Sindhudurg, Vijaydurg ferry.

Nautical Nook 4-BHK beachfront villa in Tarkarli, Sindhudurg

An honest disclosure: StayVista doesn’t currently have dedicated Devgad-town properties. Tarkarli (60 km south of Devgad) is the closest base, and a day trip to Devgad–Kunkeshwar from there is the standard plan our hosts recommend. If you want to stay overnight in Devgad town itself, local guesthouses near Kunkeshwar Beach are an alternative.

What we see across our portfolio: Travellers staying with us in Ratnagiri most often pair their visit with a same-day Aare Ware zipline booking. Hosts in Tarkarli regularly direct guests to the Devgad–Kunkeshwar drive as a Day 2 morning loop (out by 8 AM, back by 6 PM). These are patterns we see repeatedly across booking notes and host conversations.

Estimated Trip Cost

A 3–4 day Konkan coastal road trip from Mumbai costs ₹6,000–9,000 per person for a group of four sharing fuel and a mid-range stay. Solo travel runs roughly ₹10,000–13,000. The math is straightforward, and the costs are honest — no hidden fees, no surprise tolls.

Compared to Goa for the same number of nights, this works out roughly 30% cheaper — most of the savings come from villa pricing being lower outside the peak Goa season window.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Konkan roads are viral on Instagram in 2026?

The three trending Konkan coastal roads are Aare Ware Road in Ratnagiri (10 km, twin beaches and India’s first over-ocean zipline), Devgad–Kunkeshwar Road in Sindhudurg (14 km, windmill garden and 12th-century Shiva temple), and Kasheli / Devghali Road near Rajapur in Ratnagiri (5 km, cliff-top viewpoint and tide-dependent cove). All three feature in the recurring “Top 3 hidden Konkan roads” Reels caption.

How far is Aare Ware Beach from Mumbai by road?

Aare Ware is approximately 350 km from Mumbai via NH66 (Mumbai–Goa Highway). The current 2026 travel time is 8–9 hours under normal conditions. Once the four pending Ratnagiri flyovers are complete (target: March 2026 onwards), travel time should drop closer to 6 hours per Punenow News. Plan a dawn departure from Mumbai to clear Panvel traffic.

Is the Konkan coastal road safe to drive in the monsoon?

No, not these specific cliff roads. Konkan averages 200–400 mm of rainfall per month between June and September, and the rural single-lane stretches between Ratnagiri and Devgad face landslip risk and reduced visibility. The Aare Ware zipline also closes during the monsoon. If you want to visit Konkan in monsoon, swap the cliff roads for the Konkan waterfalls trail — that’s where the season actually shines.

Aare Ware or Devgad — which is better?

Aare Ware for first-timers, Devgad for slow trips. Aare Ware is more accessible from Ratnagiri (35 min), has the signature over-ocean zipline, and works as a half-day excursion. Devgad takes a full day or overnight and rewards travellers who want temple culture, the windmill garden, and Alphonso mango shopping. If you only have 2 days, prioritise Aare Ware. With 3+ days, do both.

Can you do this trip on a bike?

Yes. Royal Enfield, ADV tourers (Himalayan, Tiger 660), and middleweight cruisers all handle the route well. Daylight riding only, helmet mandatory, and carry rain gear even in May (Konkan weather can shift quickly). Speed limits: 80–100 km/h on NH66 stretches, much lower on the Ratnagiri–Devgad rural section. Solo bikers love the coastal curves, but the last 2 km to Kasheli is rough — adjust your tyre choice accordingly.

How much does a 3-day Konkan road trip cost?

₹6,000–9,000 per person for a group of four sharing fuel and a mid-range villa stay. The breakdown: ₹600–900 fuel, ₹400 tolls, ₹3,000–4,500 for 3 nights’ shared stay, ₹1,500–2,000 food, and ₹800–1,200 for activities like the Aare Ware zipline and temple entries. Solo travel costs more (₹10,000–13,000) since you absorb the full fuel and stay cost. Costs exclude shopping.

Are these roads good for first-time long-distance drivers?

NH66 itself is fine — wide, well-marked, mostly four-lane, with predictable traffic outside peak holiday weekends. The rural Ratnagiri–Devgad stretch is intermediate-level: narrow at points, occasional cattle, sudden speed breakers. If this is your first long road trip, consider hiring a driver for that specific leg, or plan a longer schedule that lets you take it slow. The Aare Ware coastal road and Kasheli’s last 2 km also reward cautious driving over speed.

Where can I stay near the Aare Ware viewpoint?

Ratnagiri city is the standard base — 35 minutes from Aare Ware. Ganpatipule, 12 km north of Aare Ware, is closer but has fewer villa-style options. StayVista’s Ratnagiri villas and cottages in Ratnagiri cover both villa and homestay-style stays. Book 6–8 weeks ahead for peak season weekends; May 2026 still has availability for short-notice trips.

The Bottom Line

The Aare Ware, Devgad, and Kasheli Reels showed you the road. Here’s what gets you there and back without surprises:

  • 3 days minimum to do all three properly. 4 days if you add Tarkarli.
  • ₹6,000–9,000 per person for a group of four, mid-range stays.
  • May 2026 is the last clear window before the monsoon. October opens the next one.

Mid-May 2026 is the last clean-weather window before the monsoon. If you’re planning the trip, book a stay along the route now — Konkan villas fill 6–8 weeks ahead in peak season, and May availability is already tightening. Browse StayVista’s beach villas collection or filter directly by Ratnagiri and Tarkarli.
