Once the boats are running, the crossing is short enough to change what a day off looks like. A speedboat takes about 20 to 25 minutes. A catamaran takes roughly 50 minutes on the outbound leg. The older ferry boats take an hour to 80 minutes. Compare any of those to a three-hour drive around the creek via Pen, and the appeal is obvious.
Here’s what people underestimate: the distance isn’t the problem, the timetable is. Boats run to a schedule; they stop for the day earlier than a restaurant does, and Mandwa’s sailings depend on the tide. Plan the last boat home before you book anything else, and an Alibaug day trip works beautifully. Skip that step, and you’ll spend the afternoon watching the clock.

From our team: the 350 metres from the Mandwa pontoon to Luma’s gate is a four to five minute walk, bag in hand. It sounds like a small thing. It isn’t. Almost every other stay on this coast means a taxi from the jetty at both ends of the day, and on a seven-hour clock that’s 40 minutes and about ₹1,200 of your day spent in a car. Walking off the boat and into breakfast is the reason this package works here and wouldn’t work in Alibaug town.
A note on booking the right boat. If you take the 9:30 AM boat from the Gateway, you’ll land at Mandwa closer to 9:55 and miss the 9:30 breakfast sitting. The 8:30 AM catamaran arrives at 9:20, which — with that short walk — lands you at the table on time. It’s one line on a booking page that changes the whole morning.
What’s on the property: 270 sq ft Bohemian cottages with Bali-inspired interiors, a shared pool with sun loungers, a manicured lawn with a gazebo, and barbecue and bonfire service on request. The pool is open from 8 AM to 10 PM and is 4.5 ft deep, with children supervised at all times. Unmarried couples are welcome with valid ID. Luma doesn’t accept pets.
Be realistic about the middle of the day, though. This is a resort day, not a sightseeing day. Seven hours with a check-in and a check-out inside them does not stretch to a fort, two beaches, and a temple. Pick one short outing, or none at all, and use the cottage.

That’s precisely why a speed boat sits inside this package rather than beside it: it’s what makes an evening check-out possible at all. Squeeze a day trip around the 6:00 PM catamaran instead and you’re really packing up at 5:15.
The tide is the second thing to watch, and almost nobody mentions it. Mandwa’s pontoon and its sailings genuinely move with the water level — the operator cancelled afternoon trips on 10 September 2026 citing “unavailability of Pontoon at Mandwa jetty & also low tide,” and ran altered timings on 11 and 12 September. None of that is unusual for this jetty. Check the operator’s website on the morning you travel rather than the week before.

Five cottages, with up to two guests sharing each, put the realistic ceiling at about ten day guests on any given date. That’s a small number, and it has a practical consequence for you rather than for us: weekends fill first, and weekdays are where the availability sits. If your schedule is flexible, a Tuesday costs the same and feels like a private property.
There’s a second reason the day package matters here, and it’s the one that surprised us. Booked overnight, Luma has a minimum occupancy of 14 guests and a maximum of 25 — the whole property goes as a single buyout for large groups. So for a couple, or a family of four, the same-day picnic package isn’t the cheaper way to experience this property. It’s the only way in.

Who Should Skip This Package?
A day package with a 6:30 PM check-out suits a specific kind of trip, and it’s genuinely wrong for some people. Ruling those out here saves everyone a phone call.
- Pet parents. Luma doesn’t accept pets. If you’re travelling with a dog, this isn’t the property.
- Anyone who wants to stay the night. Overnight, Luma is a whole-property booking for 14 guests. For a smaller group, an overnight in Alibaug means a different stay — or a two-day itinerary.
- Day groups larger than about ten. Five cottages is the cap. A corporate offsite or a large family gathering needs the buyout, not the picnic package.
- Anyone planning to bring a hamper. Outside food isn’t allowed, and there’s no kitchen access. Breakfast is included, and everything else is à la carte.
- Monsoon travellers. Gateway–Mandwa boats were suspended from late May to the end of August. Between June and August, this simply isn’t bookable as a day trip.
